Hello, we’re Robert and Kay Lee Fukui

…husband-and-wife, coaches, authors of Tandem: The married entrepreneurs’ guide for greater work-life balance, and champions of married entrepreneurs who want to succeed in business without sacrificing what matters most.

Who We are

We’ve been married for over two decades, and between corporate life (Robert), small-business life (Kay Lee), and our own entrepreneurial journey, we’ve lived the highs, the lows, and the hilarious in-betweens.

Robert's Story (The City Slicker Who Threw Great Pizza)

I (Robert) grew up a classic overachiever, good grades, solid jump shot, and, according to the pizza parlor I worked at, the best pizza-tosser this side of Italy. After earning my marketing degree, I landed a coveted role at Coca-Cola. A few years later, I “got into drugs”…pharmaceuticals, that is. I spent over two decades in marketing and sales, earning national awards and climbing the corporate ladder.

But in 2016, I traded in the comfortable corporate life for the exhilarating (and occasionally terrifying) world of entrepreneurship.

Kay Lee’s Story (The Farm Girl Who Ran the Show)

While I grew up a self-confessed “city boy,” Kay Lee’s roots run deep in country soil. Her dad owned a feed store and ranch, so she was raised on horseback and in 4-H, showing cows, goats, chickens, and basically anything with four legs that wasn’t nailed down. After earning her business degree, she worked in banking before returning to the family business to run the operations.

Together, we bring the best of both worlds: corporate strategy and small-business grit…plus a shared passion for helping marriages and businesses thrive in tandem.

What We Do

When I first started consulting with small, family-run businesses, clients hired me to help them grow revenue. But it didn’t take long to see the real issue: entrepreneurs who were exhausted, wearing every hat, chasing sales in survival mode, and unintentionally turning their business into the “mistress” of the marriage.

Yes, the business brought home the bacon. But it was also eating up date nights, family time, weekends, and emotional margin.

I finally looked at Kay Lee and said, “There’s an elephant in the entrepreneur’s room… and nobody’s talking about it.” Hustle culture had normalized sacrificing marriage for the business. And even if the company grew, the couple often suffered.

So we decided to tackle both sides of the problem, the business and the relationship. We began coaching married entrepreneurs together, helping them scale sustainably, create healthy boundaries, communicate better, resolve conflict faster, and reclaim the freedom they dreamed of when they first started their business.

Because if your marriage and your business aren’t thriving in tandem, neither one reaches its full potential.

Why We Do It

Like many entrepreneurs, we didn’t grow up in homes that modeled healthy balance.

My dad was a pastor. Meaning the congregation often came first and the family patiently waited in the pews.

Kay Lee’s childhood looked similar: her dad’s long hours in the family business meant missed milestones, including her dad being absent for her high school graduation so someone could keep the store open.

We saw early what happens when work consistently takes priority over relationships. And we promised ourselves: That will not be our story.

Before we got married, we invested in two years of marriage counseling (yes, pre-marriage counseling for two years… the full story is in our book Tandem: The Married Entrepreneurs’ Guide for Greater Work-Life Balance). The tools we learned in counseling transformed us, helping us communicate clearly, resolve conflict well, and build healthy boundaries that protect connection.

Now we integrate those same tools into our consulting and coaching programs because a profitable business is great, but a thriving marriage is priceless. And you deserve both.

This is why we wake up every morning: to help married entrepreneurs build strong, connected marriages and flourishing businesses without losing themselves, each other, or the joy of the journey.

Testimonials

They have helped us work through so many of those difficult things that come up in business, as they continue to challenge us in all the right areas. Marriage is hard. Business is hard. A healthy marriage and business is hardest! Our marriage and businesses have grown tremendously as we grow and learn

— Rob & Mariah

The weekend retreat with Robert and Kay Lee was the pause we needed to relax, regroup, reconnect, and dream again. We received a lot of clarity on the areas of the business that was keeping us stuck and making our life harder. We can breathe again.

— Tim & Shawna

Boundaries. That was the word that stuck out to us and the reason our life seems out of control. The very first session with Robert and Kay Lee gave us the light bulb moment to realize, saying “no” to more things doesn’t slow down business but can accelerate it because we can now say “yes” to more of the right things. And our life stays in balance.

— Greg & Lisa
