Ep. 115 - The Mergers and Acquisition of Marriage and Business

It’s one thing to be married and another to work together in business. And for a man, it can be tough on the ego to lay down a successful corporate career to join your wife in her business and not be the “boss.” Meet Phil Cheng and Elizabeth Yang. Two power houses in their own right who recently completed a successful merger of business and marriage.

Elizabeth built a very successful law firm specializing in Intellectual Property as well as Family Law with several offices around Southern California. Phil is bringing his human resource and operational management gifts into the practice to help take it to the next level.

In this interview, we cover a lot of ground around successfully working together as husband and wife, laying down your ego, and maintaining work-life balance. Take a listen.

Key Questions:

  • Both- You have just entered a merger of sorts. Phil left his corporate job to join you in your law practice. Many would not dare work together as husband and wife. Is this something you ever imagined doing 10 years ago?

  • Both- You were both married before. So I would imagine you might have been careful about working with your spouse?

  • Elizabeth- You’ve handled divorces and various family matters in your firm. So you’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and must have learned a lot. What have you learned that breaks marriages apart and what have you done to make sure that doesn’t happen to your marriage?

  • Phil- Many men wouldn’t want to work with their wives. Especially when their wife is the head of the business, what allows you to be able to do that?

  • Both- How did this topic of working together come up and is there any type of preparation that has gone into doing this?
